2D Illustration Cheat Sheet

2D Illustration Cheat Sheet for our trial-ers

Master the technical edge in minutes.

1. The Power Shortcuts (Must-Knows)

  • > Direct Edit Mode:Double-Click any object to enter edit mode, or press Cmd + E (Mac) / Ctrl + E (Win).

  • > The "Magic" Spacebar: Hold Spacebar to toggle the Hand Tool for quick panning without switching tools.

  • > Precision Zoom:Ctrl + Alt + Plus (+) to zoom in; Ctrl + Alt + Minus (-) to zoom out.

  • > Snap to Grid: Toggle Cmd + G (Mac) / Ctrl + G (Win) to align objects with mathematical accuracy instantly.

2. Pro Illustration Tools

  • >Smart Vector Fill: Found in the Toolbox. Use it to fill complex areas created by overlapping paths without needing to "join" them first.

  • >Auto Trace: Go to Image > Auto Trace. Converts raster (pixel) images into clean, scalable vector paths in seconds.

  • >Annotation Lens: The "magnifying glass" icon. It creates a call-out that shows a zoomed-in, live view of a specific area of your drawing.

  • >Path Tools: Use the Reshape Tool to "push" or "pull" parts of a vector line as if it were physical wire.

3. Technical Accuracy (The Canvas Edge)

  • >Dimensioning: Use the Linear, Chain, or Baseline Dimension tools to automatically display the exact length, diameter, or angle of an object.

  • >Scale Settings: Set your document scale (e.g., 1:10 or 1/4" = 1') via the Properties Bar to ensure all measurements remain mathematically sound.

  • >SmartLines: Use the Connector tools for flowcharts. If you move a box, the lines stay attached and reroute themselves automatically.

4. File Management & Workflow

  • >Importing: Canvas handles 70+ formats. Drag and drop AutoCAD (DWG/DXF), PDFs, or high-res TIFFs directly onto the layout.

  • The Properties Bar: Always keep this open! It is context-sensitive; it changes its options based on what you have selected (Text, Vector, or Image).

  • >Symbol Library: Open the Symbol Palette to access thousands of pre-loaded technical symbols (bolts, electrical icons, etc.) or drag your own creation into the library to reuse it.
